Diez Vista Race Map
The Diez Vista 50km Trail Run is a tough Ultra-marathon situated in the rugged Coastal Mountain Range of British Columbia. The route follows the trails around Sasamat and Buntzen Lakes, the highlight being an airy traverse of the Diez Vistas ridge. The run is very popular with trail runners and ultra-marathoners, and was sold out in just 77 minutes this year.
Canadian Map Makers worked closely with the race director (Wendy Montgomery) to craft a map that showed every twist, turn and trail junction along the complex route. The map also includes the locations of aid stations and other facilities. The elevation profile we created has an index system that allows runners to see where the high and low points are along the route.
Our map was very well received by the running community, with comments such as "totally awesome map" and "that's one nice map!" being common place! Mapmakers has definitely now set a new standard for race maps!
Another interesting spin off from this project has been the start of a new relationship between the Diez Vista Race and the Coquitlam Search and Rescue Team. Steve Chapman is a new "member in training" with the team, and after talking with Wendy things progressed from there. The race will be donating some of it's proceeds to the SAR team, and the team will also have a presence at the start/finish area for this year's race. It is hoped that this relationship will develop further in coming years, with a view that the event will become an official fundraiser for Coquitlam Search and Rescue. Some individual members have also kindly donated their time and will be on hand to administer first aid on the day (if needed).
